If you have a loved one with OCD and don’t know much about the condition, it can be easy to accidentally say something less than ideal when you're trying to make them feel better. Here are a few tips on what *not* to say to someone with OCD—because even if the intentions behind them are good, these phrases can come across as dismissive or misinformed. What other phrases would you add to this list? Has anyone ever said any of these things to you? #ocd #exposureresponseprevention
Feeling like you need to share every detail of your intrusive thoughts? It might be compulsive confessing. Confession is a sneaky OCD compulsion because it can be hard to differentiate from healthy sharing. If you’re struggling to tell them apart, look at the intention behind the sharing: Healthy sharing tends to be motivated by a desire for support or understanding, while compulsive confession tends to be rooted in anxiety, fear, and shame. Confessing may provide some momentary relief, but in the long run, it only makes OCD worse. The good news is that like every compulsion, it’s treatable. You can learn to resist the urge to confess and tolerate discomfort, even if you have lingering doubts about being “perfectly honest.” Download the NOCD app to learn more. #ocd #exposureresponseprevention
When OCD says “steer clear,” it can be so tempting to listen. But facing what it wants you to avoid (even in small ways) is how you reclaim your life. And you don’t have to do it alone—working with a therapist who specializes in OCD and evidence-based treatments like ERP therapy can be a game-changer here! The fear of acting on intrusive thoughts is common among people struggling with OCD, can be the main driver of their compulsions, and can become debilitating. While the thoughts and sensations experienced by OCD sufferers are the polar opposite of their real desires and values, this disconnect is exactly what tends to make OCD so distressing and confusing. Have you ever experienced this fear? #ocd #exposureresponseprevention #realocd
OCD is not a personality quirk or a desirable trait—it's a mental health disorder that is widely recognized as being particularly disabling and all-consuming. While OCD symptoms might build up and escalate slowly, they can easily become overwhelming, time-consuming, and extremely life-limiting in various ways. This is why it's so important to raise awareness and combat misinformation about OCD: everyone deserves the ability to seek help whenever they first need it in order to minimize the effects OCD can have on a person's life. #ocd #exposureresponseprevention
