A 2024 study titled "Life Beyond a Jar" explores the impacts of tank size and enrichment on betta fish behavior and well-being. Bettas were rotated between five different tank conditions, and their behavior was recorded. In the small and barren tanks, bettas showed more abnormal behaviors like hovering and pacing. In the medium and large tanks with enrichment, they displayed less stress-induced behavior. The researchers recommend: - A minimum of 5.6L (1.48 gallons) for retailers displaying bettas, including gravel, live plants, and hiding spots. - Significantly larger tanks for permanent care.
