Our ancestors didn’t floss… so why do we need to? Back then, they ate tough, fibrous foods—think raw plants, meat, and nuts—that naturally scrubbed their teeth. Even fruit was a rare treat! No processed foods, no refined sugars, no sticky carbs (like bread and crackers) feeding oral bacteria. Plus, they chewed more, which stimulated saliva production. Fast forward to today: Softer foods, ultra-processed carbs, and constant snacking mean more plaque buildup and trapped food between teeth. Our modern diet sets us up for cavities and gum disease—unless we step in with floss. And professional cleanings in-office! So no, our ancestors didn’t floss. But they also didn’t deal with the dental issues we do today. Some habits evolve for a reason!
