Group seating is not best practices if it makes it harder for you to teach and for students to learn. When I was new and really struggling with management issues, I still thought I had to keep students in group seating because rows were too “industrial” and would break their creative spirits. But good news! There is no constitutional right for students to sit with their friends or in groups. So having a seating chart and setting up the room so students are better able to focus and learn is the name of the game.
