Lions Mane (Hericium erinaceus) growing in the cleft of an oak tree. Hericium are weakly parasitic white rot fungi, H. erinaceus prefers hardwoods like Oak. In the US they are not rare or threatened, it is legal to collect them (but their conservation status is different in the UK). . There’s a lot of hype around this mushroom and the bioactive compounds contained with the fruiting body and mycelium. While some of the initial results and trials with these sesquiterpenes show incredible potential for helping with neurodegenerative conditions and nerve damage, I am EXTREMELY skeptical of the marketing that promises this mushroom will improve your memory, cognitive function, and focus - take those claims with a massive grain of salt. . Better than spending $50 on a tiny bottle of tincture or pills, try buying and cooking lions mane. It is absolutely one of my mushrooms to prep and eat. With its distinct mild flavor and unique texture, it’s an incredible addition to any dish or on its own. Get creative, I am especially fond of frying up lions mane nuggets and tossing them in sauce. . . .
