A meta-analysis in PLoS Medicine (Kirsch et al., 2008) revealed that SSRIs are often no more effective than placebo for mild-to-moderate depression. The Lancet (Cipriani et al., 2018) found that while SSRIs were statistically better than placebo, their real-world impact was minimal.
