🛑 Say goodbye to Polk Street. Polk Street near George R. Brown and across from The Rustic, a restaurant and music venue, will soon be vacated from the city's ownership, according to a sign showing a request has been made. The move is part of George R. Brown Convention Center's multi-million dollar expansion of the facility. 🏙️ “A real gut punch to Houston” Houston City Controller Chris Hollins issued a dire warning to City Council on Wednesday that Houston is near running out of funds and requested a "joint emergency task force" to find ways to tackle the impending budget shortfall. The growing budget crisis is partially the result of a recent Texas Supreme Court decision involving Houston's spending on streets and drainage that will plunge the city into a deeper financial bind, resulting in a nearly $330 million deficit. ✍🏻 @fbugenhagen_ 📷 HTV . . . #houston #houstonnews #hounews
🚓 Mayor Whitmire says HPD will not assist in ICE raids. But will that last? Houston officials have been largely close-lipped about their role in efforts to comply with President Donald Trump's calls for mass deportations as a series of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids occurred across the state. However, Houston Mayor John Whitmire offered some insight during Tuesday's public comment period at City Hall, confirming that Houston Police Department officers had not been involved in any recent raids. Whitmire acknowledged that it was a "sad situation" that Houston's Hispanic and Latino residents, who make up a majority of the population, were anxious about. He cautioned those concerned that the "worst thing" they could do is politicize the ongoing issue. Whitmire indicated that the raids conducted by federal immigration officers are only for "warranted criminal, violent offenders." He added that HPD would continue to uphold state law and hold all violent offenders, regardless of their immigration status, accountable. Whitmire's comments fuel questions about city agencies' future involvement in such efforts, particularly after Gov. Greg Abbott called for additional state agencies' assistance to comply with the federal call for a widespread illegal immigration crackdown. ✍🏻 Faith Bugenhagen 📷 HTV . . . #houston #houstonnews #hounews #hpd #houstonpolice #ice #iceraid #immigration #migrants #immigrants #texas #gregabbott #donaldtrump
📚 "HISD parents and students are fighting back!" The Houston ISD community is planning a mass sickout this Wednesday to protest "the harmful HISD takeover" and "[HISD Superintendent Mike Miles'] weak response on immigration safety in schools," organizers said on Monday. Titled "Sickout: A Day Without Students," organizers have blanketed social media with posters advertising ways to participate in the protest. Organizers are asking parents to take their kids out for the day and to protest Wednesday morning at 900 W. Gray, outside of Wharton Dual Language Academy. The sickout will involve students and families from over 118 HISD schools, according to the announcement. ✍🏻 Allyson Ackerman . . . #houston #hou #houstontexas #htx #houstonnews #hounews #houstonprotest #protest #hisd #mikemiles #students #teachers #teachersofinstagram #parents
💬 A 9th grader’s shocking experience in Conroe ISD’s Spanish class sparks outrage. A Conroe ISD parent is demanding answers after her daughter said she was asked about her citizenship status while in Spanish class. Susana Amaya, whose 15-year-old daughter attends Conroe High School's 9th-grade campus, says her daughter came home from school on Monday and told her about the teacher's remarks. Seething with anger, Amaya turned to social media to report on what had happened. "This is the story. Since Conroe ISD is not going to say anything, this is what happened," Amaya wrote on Facebook. "Share. Share. I'm so tired and drained, but I am going to speak up." "He looked my daughter dead in the face and asked her if she was here illegally," Amaya said on TikTok. "At this point, asking that question is a threat because why would you need to know that? What difference does it make? Other than to make other people feel scared? It's ignorant." ✍🏻 Faith Bugenhagen . . . #texas #houston #conroetx #immigration #politics #donaldtrump #hou #htx #houstonnews #hounews

Close on the heels of a winter storm, a less novel and far wetter week is shaping up for Houston and the surrounding area. Sunday saw Harris County drenched by waves of thunderstorms. We'll see more of these downpours as the week continues, with Wednesday, Thursday and Friday likely featuring the strongest storms. This pattern comes to us courtesy of an inbound low pressure system expected later in the week, according to National Weather Service (NWS) forecasters. "Expect multiple opportunities for rain throughout the week, particularly Wednesday and Thursday," NWS forecasters wrote on Monday morning. "Moist southerly flow and a passing low pressure system will lead to increased rainfall chances later this week." ✍🏻 Dan Carson 📷 Getty Images . . . #houston #hou #htown #houstontexas #htx #houstonnews #hounews #houwx #houstonweather
🧊 Despite a temporary block on President Donald Trump's freeze on federal grants and assistance, Houston nonprofits were left stunned and scrambling for answers as to how they can continue to operate regularly. Trump's freeze was set to take effect late Tuesday afternoon before a federal judge blocked it. The order would require federal agencies to halt the payments of all federal financial assistance. During the temporary stop, agencies would evaluate spending to ensure it aligns with the executive orders Trump has issued since returning to the Oval Office. Even with more time to evaluate, Houston charities say their futures are unknown. "The way that the grants are written, just the way that the funding is provided to these nonprofit organizations, would essentially see them without any cast reversed based on the programs within days," said Juan Proaño, CEO of League of United Latin American Citizens National. "That's obviously a really great concern for us." ✍🏻 Faith Bugenhagen 📷 Getty Images . . . #federalfundingfreeze #federalfunding #nonprofit #donaldtrump #politics #maga #republican #democrat #houston #houstonnews #hounews
