#greenscreen So
#DonaldTrump has ended
#birthright #citizenship in the
#USA, making the
#US, for the first time since the Civil War, *not* a
#jussoli #country. Jus Soli, or 'right of soil' in Latin, is a policy roughly 30
#countries hold, stating that ANY baby born on that nation's sovereign soil, is automatically a citizen of that nation. The majority of the
#NewWorld (except
#Colombia for some reason, and the
#DominicanRepublic because of
#Haiti) is jus soli, while the majority of the rest of the world (minus
#Chad,
#Pakistan,
#Lesotho, and
#Tanzania) are Jus Sanguinis countries, which is Latin for 'right of the citizen.' Basically, where you’re born is irrelevant, its who you’re born to that determines your citizenship. Jus Sanguinis is responsible for very many
#stateless humans around the world, as refugees often are denied citizenship from countries they flee to on the grounds of this law. While
#DonaldTrump and the
#Trump administration have severely limited Jus Soli in the USA, we have not entirely, wholly removed it, which is what
#India did in 1987 by demanding at least one parent is a citizen. The US is not even demanding this, as work visas and legal temporary stays are still under consideration, but again, this is the severest restriction on our Jus Soli national policy since literally the abolishment of slavery. What are our thoughts on this?
