He’s talking about people who believe in crazy things, people who make up 50% of the United States. They are in denial of systemic racism. They believe an invisible man in the sky is watching us and use that to justify hateful beliefs, such as thinking lgbt people shouldn’t exist. They vote for people who to them are a “funny meme.” ahem trump ahem (“Giddy with delight, seeing what’s to come.” And “the humors not the same coming from denial”, obviously about climate change) They deny the crushing reality that capitalism is destroying our mental health and causing global warming. “Forgiving who you are for what you stand to gain” is talking about people who turn their back on all these issues, and mgmt is trying to forgive them for their lack of empathy and intellect. Mgmt can’t escape them because they are everywhere. (“I know that if you hide it doesn’t go away”) Open up your phone. you’ll be reminded that there are millions of people who think differently than you, people who think you are the crazy one. (“It makes you want to jump off a bridge with a massive stone. (“On the bridge, bring a stone”) Little dark age is a reference to depression, it’s like realizing the world is in a horribly dark place but you feel overwhelmingly alone because everyone is in denial. This is what the song means to me, and I would bet a million dollars that it means the same thing to mgmt. it’s fairly obvious what it’s about if you understand the true state of our society. But to a lot of people it probably just passes over their heads and they think it’s a cool sounding song. it’s funny you posted this bc I was driving around and this song came on and I was like holy shit, what a fucking classic.
