How to Start Making Your Own Backpacking Meals🍲 Hit "Follow" for outdoorsy food inspo! 1️⃣ Figure out what type of meals you WANT to make and why. I started making my own backpacking meals for two reasons: I wanted to control my own nutrition, AND backpacking meals are EXPENSIVE. Making my own has helped me control my nutrition and take better care of myself, and it has saved me money. 2️⃣ Start easy! Buy pre-dehydrated vegetables, dehydrated potatoes, lentils, and chicken/tuna packets. Start experimenting with recipe creation. You don't need to buy a dehydrator to start making your own meals. There are SO many options out there. 3️⃣ Buy a cheap dehydrator or purchase one. 4️⃣Make things like apple crisps, or try dehydrating some leftovers to rehydrate. Get a feel for how your dehydrator works and the rehydration process. 5️⃣ Use pre-made dehydrated meals for inspo! This is a great way to understand how to balance your macros in the backcountry. I highly recommend bringing oil with you to add fat to your meal. Fat is the HARDEST macro to consume when backpacking because it can spoil easily. Bringing a small container of olive oil can help with that. 6️⃣ Create meals for (close to) immediate use. Until you understand the shelf life of the dehydrated materials, try making them right before use to decrease the chance of spoiling. As you begin dehydrating more, you will get a feel for how long different materials last based on your storage preference. 7️⃣ Have fun! Many of the meals I have made for backpacking were new to me. Now, I've even included them as part of my meal plan rotation for at-home! I have an entire section of my blog dedicated to food!
