Canadian & American Reactions to Beef Masak Lomak and Sambal Belacan Habanero Tempoyak for the First Time! 🤍Sharing our Malay cuisine with friends who are trying it for the first time is something my family and I take great pride in. It's always such a joy to see their excitement and adventurous spirit when introduced to our beloved flavors. 🤍For every first-timer, I like to start with something classic and comforting: Masak Lemak, paired with sambal and a selection of exotic vegetables. This time, I took it up a notch with Sambal Belacan Habanero and Tempoyak—bold and unique flavors that are not for the faint-hearted! 🤍Recently, we hosted two amazing guests: Lyradd from Toronto, Canada, and Dan from Chicago, USA. For the occasion, I cooked Beef Masak Lemak, Sambal Tumis Tilapia Fish, and sautéed garlic bok choy. 🤍This was Lyradd’s third time enjoying Malay food at our home. On his first visit, I cooked him Beef Rendang and absolutely loved it. He loved it so much that he requested it again on his second visit! (Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to record his reactions on either occasion.) 🤍For Dan, however, this was his first-ever experience with Malay cuisine. We were thrilled to see him dive right in and embrace the boldness of the Sambal Belacan Habanero and the acquired taste of Tempoyak! 🤍Seeing both of them savor every bite and genuinely enjoy the food was heartwarming. Moments like these always remind us why we love sharing our culture through food. The best part? By the end of the meal, both Lyradd and Dan were already talking about visiting Malaysia one day! 🤍Next on the menu, if they’ve officially mastered Masak Lemak, I’ll introduce them to dishes like Asam Pedas or Nasi Kerabu etc. It’s a delicious journey, one plate at a time!
