Today was a very cool experience for me and my girls. We both got to speak in Richmond in front of the Virginia assembly on a bill that ensures safety for Type 1 Diabetics in public schools. This was such a neat experience for my girls to see how laws are written and voted upon. To watch my 10-year-old speak in front of all those politicians was something that swelled my heart. I hope they always see how important it is to always stand up for what you believe in and advocate for those who are scared to speak up. Although they didn’t immediately pass it, they did consider it and it’s been continued to later this week, so hopefully that’s a step in the right direction. With all that being said, I feel extremely fortunate that she attends her school and receives the very best care. All of the nurses that have ever taken care of her have never fallen short. And although we were not there directly for ourselves, we hope to make a difference for the younger kids that are not as independent as she is. I heard some scary stories from some of the moms we sat with today and I felt so scared for them. The law is very outdated and it’s not being followed by all the schools in Virginia so it would be great to have it rewritten and very clear & across-the-board so everyone is on the same page and get the care they truly need. #t1d #type1diabetes #type1diabetic #medicalmama #virginialaws #makingadifference
