For anyone new here, I recently graduated medical school and have started working as a doctor — despite the critiques of many who believe that going to music festivals or wearing edgy outfits in my free time is “unprofessional behavior” that makes me “unsuitable for the role of a physician”. . Throughout this 12 year process of college, then medical school, and now residency, I have made an active effort to not lose my identity outside of medicine along the way. I created this account to show that you don’t have to sacrifice your personal life to be a high achieving professional, and to show yet again that women are deserving of respect regardless of what they wear. . There is so much stigma surrounding going out, having fun and living life intensely, and I’m so tired of this narrative that doctors should sacrifice everything and devote their entire lives to medicine. Being a physician is just a part of who I am (a pretty big part nonetheless ! But not something that should take up my entire existence) . People seem to have the idea that for every weekend you take care of yourself and go out with friends rather than spend the weekend reading up on peer reviewed research articles, you’re causing harm to your patients. When in reality, burnout is the true enemy that causes much further harm. My patients are best served by me taking care of myself, so that I have more to give when I’m present with them and can show up fully for longer into my career. . I absolutely love being a doctor, but I also love being human. The feeling of being surrounded by my rave community that shares a deep love for music, dance, fashion, self expression, and embracing what it means to be alive is more recharging than any amount of sleep to me. And trust me, its not lost on me for a second that being a doctor is a career of lifelong learning; just because I have a balance of doing fun things doesn’t mean I’m not incorporating the hard work and learning along the way. Don’t let anybody tell you you can’t do both. . IG: @JULIAROSE.md (follow before TT gets deleted ⚡️) .
