The Moro reflex is a primitive reflex that triggers a startle response by activating the sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight response), leading to an increased heart rate, a sudden rise in blood pressure, rapid and shallow breathing, facial flushing, and feelings of distress or anger in response to a stimulus. This reflex typically integrates around four months of age and transitions into a postural reflex known as the Strauss Reflex, or adult startle reflex. Unlike the Moro reflex, the Strauss Reflex allows individuals to respond to stimuli without activating the sympathetic nervous system. This developmental process highlights the importance of allowing infants to experience the Moro reflex naturally rather than restricting it through swaddling. Since the brain learns through repetitive movement, limiting this response may interfere with natural brain development. Drop a comment if you want to learn how to integrate this!
