Ugh vulnerable post….The realistic glimpse of how you are treated in Veterinary Medicine. A client called and spoke with me about her dog being hit by a car 3 days prior and seems to have labored breathing. I informed the client that her dog needs to be seen asap for consultation/diagnostics/etc. She asked me how much it would be and I briefly discussed how the process works. She had then informed me that she in not able to afford the costs and her dog is going to 🪦now because of me. She said that when she does pass away, she is going to drop of her 💀 body off at the front of my hospital, and put MY name on her dogs ‘toe tag’ and then hung up on me. This right here is one of the most horrible things said to me. This was said to someone who has dedicated half of their life to this industry to help pets, clients, and my vet peeps. Said to someone who has missed many dinners/events with my husband/friends so I could stay late to do an emergency surgery. Said to someone who comes in on their PTO to teach someone how to unblock an obstructed cat, in order to save a life. So no. No I am not in it just for the money. On Christmas, we noticed Courtney, our 19 year old cats lower left jaw was swollen. When it comes to mouth swelling in cats you typically worry about a tooth abscess or a tumor. Due to Courtney having several health problems (heart murmur, chronic kidney failure, hyperthyroidism) she has not been a candidate for her yearly dental cleanings due to the risk of anesthesia for several years. She has lost her lower canines - which is a sign of disease. We were ‘hoping’ that it was an abscess vs. tumor. Unfortunately, when a cat has a tumor in their mouth it is typically cancer. Living in a vets house- we were able to get Courtney on antibiotics and heart/kidney safe pain meds immediately (thanks Stinky). The next day the swelling was getting larger, but there were no visible signs of the issue with an oral exam. Due to her mouth hurting, she didn’t want to eat and she was becoming lethargic. I ended up adding an appetite stimulate to her daily regimen. She already is a lil meow with not a lot of body fat, so eating is crucial. I had to continually go in and feed her by blending her prescription renal diet into a slurry a million times a day, spooning it to her, and having to syringe feed her (for over a week). As her jaw continued to swell even though she had been on antibiotics for 3 days- there was nothing naturally draining. I clipped and cleaned her bottom jaw and punctured it with a needle allowing for the site to drain (not all what came out is seen- at all👹). She was on pain medication during this, but it was still uncomfortable. For several days- through New Years, she wasn’t getting better, but not wasn’t getting worse, but was thinking about her quality of life. I was reluctantly having the end of life discussion with my husband. We had to isolate her from the other goblins in the house so she can have continual food out and rest without interruption. I was worried to wake up and find her 💀. My holiday was spent sobbing, knowing the meow I have had for almost half of my life isn’t doing well, knowing the inevitable. However, all of the time we spent with her giving her treatment/around the clock care, the tears I cried (to the point I got rashes under my eyes from rubbing so hard)- she is back!!!! She is doing amazing and eating like a lil piggy with no appetite stimulate to help! **I have been around a lot of death since 2022 (humans and pets) and live in a constant fear of losing those I love. I wouldn’t wish this pain on anyone- knowing my goodbye is quickly approaching. Live in the present. Enjoy the moment meow.
