MIX: LIQUID SMOKE “Dance, Dance, Dance” / 1975 •into• JIM GILSTRAP “I’m on Fire” / 1975 I couldn’t find much on Liquid Smoke other than the fact that they were once known as “Final Touch”, played a few times on Soul Train and co-produced by pre-disco star wars fame Meco. Jim Gilstrap was once a prominently popular background vocalist on records ranging from Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand (etc) as well as the male lead on the theme from “Good Times”. David Bowie (🕊️) peeled off his glam and decided to not only overhaul and reinvent his image, paying homage to the revolutionary soul music coming out of America in the 70s. Young Americans was recorded primarily in Philly and prominently features Carlos Alomar on guitar, David Sanborn (🕊️) on saxophone and Luther Vandross (🕊️) on background vocals, arranging AND writing ! LJ Reynolds joined The Dramatics in ‘73 and had a successful run with the group before going solo in ‘80. the three solo albums that followed in the early 80s, particularly Travelin’, was a masterclass in both post-disco AND R&B.
