🎯Quiz Time: Test Your Critical Thinking! A nurse is caring for a patient with a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who is receiving oxygen therapy via nasal cannula at 4 liters per minute. The patient reports increasing dyspnea. What is the nurse's best action? A) Increase the oxygen flow rate to 6 liters per minute. B) Notify the healthcare provider about the patient's dyspnea. C) Switch to a non-rebreather mask for more effective oxygen delivery. D) Encourage the patient to practice pursed-lip breathing. 💭 Drop your answers in the comments below! Ready to check your knowledge? Swipe for the correct answer and rationale. Answer: ✅ D) Encourage the patient to practice pursed-lip breathing. Rationale: Pursed-lip breathing slows the respiratory rate and enhances exhalation, reducing air trapping in patients with COPD. Increasing oxygen flow (A) could suppress their hypoxic drive, and a non-rebreather mask (C) is not necessary unless oxygen saturation is critically low. While notifying the healthcare provider (B) is important, addressing the dyspnea directly is the priority. 💡Knowing the right action in these scenarios can save lives! Keep practicing and build your confidence. Recognizing lung sounds is essential for assessing respiratory health! Crackles signal high-pitched, discontinuous sounds; rhonchi are coarse and rumbling, often cleared by coughing; and wheezes are musical noises, typically louder on expiration. Pharmacology can be really difficult to learn in nursing school because there are so many meds to know! 🫠 And trying to memorize everything is a huge time waster because, I don't know about you, but I know for me it's nearly impossible to keep all of that info straight! 🙃 That's why 🧠critical thinking🧠 is so important in nursing school!! When you can connect the medication indications, side effects, and nursing considerations back to the mechanism of action, it will be a LOT easier to critically think through select all that apply questions, priority questions, and patient situations and case studies. And go become the nurse that God created only YOU to be!! 💜 #pharmacology #nursingschool #nursingschoolpharm #pharmacologystudytips #startingnursingschool #nursingschoolclinicals #nursingskills
