After a politically charged year, it's no surprise that Ohioans searched for ways to express their views. Some of them turned to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. F47 LGB, FK KAMLA and EADMUSK were among 971 proposed license plates the Ohio BMV rejected in 2024, according to a list obtained by this newspaper's statehouse bureau. The agency bans plates that are profane, sexually explicit, refer to excrement, advocate lawlessness or could provoke a violent response. A committee of seven people meets daily throughout the year to review vanity plate requests, according to a BMV spokesperson. The committee sends its recommendations to the registrar's office and other staff for final approval or denial. Last year's rejections displayed plenty of hostility, such as FKMYEX, AH SOLE and G3T BENT. One person was offended enough by the state of New Jersey to try getting FU NJ on their plate. Variations on a common refrain − EF CNCER − returned in 2024. Ohio also gut burned a couple times with NUKE OH and IH8OH1O.
