In 2019, I was initially misdiagnosed with severe allergies, but I had a strong intuition that something else was wrong. I researched the fluid constantly dripping from my nose and shared my findings with my primary care doctor, who prescribed allergy medications. After two weeks of no improvement, I went to the hospital, explaining that my symptoms suggested a CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) leak. The ER doctor dismissed my concerns, telling me to avoid Google, and sent me home with Flonase. Despite the ongoing leakage, I collected 55 mL of the fluid and returned to the emergency room, insisting they test it. They hesitated but ultimately complied, confirming it was indeed brain fluid. I underwent immediate testing and had my first surgery in November 2019, which was unsuccessful. Due to my insurance limitations, I had to wait a year to see a specialist for a second surgery in 2020 at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco My experience is both unique and straightforward: it emphasizes the importance of self-advocacy in healthcare, particularly for Black women facing racial disparities. I am eager to connect with other Black women who have gone through similar challenges so we can share our stories and work together for change. My book “ The Best Doctor is You” will be released 2025!
