What's fueling LA wildfires right now Three major wildfires around Los Angeles have killed at least two people and prompted evacuation orders for 70,000 more. At least 400,000 people are without power and officials estimate billions of dollars in damage and more than 1,000 structures burned. The Palisades fire, just west of LA, is officially the most destructive in the city's history. Matthew Cappucci, a meteorologist at MyRadar, explains why these fires are so destructive right now and how rare it is to see wildfires in the area this time of year. #californiafires #lafires #palisades #palisadesfire #meteorologist #lafires #wildfires #wildfire #wildfiresmoke #californiawildfire #fire #california #news #losangeles #pbsnews @matthewcappucci
More than 3,000 Native American children died in the custody of the U.S. government after being forced to attend boarding schools from the 1800s to 1960s, according to an investigation by @washingtonpost. That's three times the number of lives lost that the government documented in its own investigation released earlier this year. The U.S. Interior Department found 973 children died during a 150-year period at the schools that stripped children of their language and culture to assimilate them into white society. The children suffered abuse, starvation, beatings and forced labor.PBS News Hour's William Brangham spoke with one of the lead reporters on this story, Dana Hedgpeth, who said they built on the government's work to give a more "complete accounting" of the "systematic effort" to seize tribal lands and erase Native American culture."These are not the schools that your children or my children in modern times would be subjected to," Hedgpeth said. "They really were not. And as a very wise woman from the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation said to me, 'what schools have cemeteries?'" #pbs #news #pbsnews

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said Wednesday afternoon that it is investigating an attack in New Orleans' French Quarter as an act of terrorism and believes the suspect had help. Police killed the suspect — identified by the FBI as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas — in a firefight after he drove a pickup truck into a crowd of people, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 30. Alethea Duncan, an assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s New Orleans field office, said an Islamic State flag was "located on the trailer hitch of the vehicle." The truck also contained weapons and potential improvised explosive devices (IEDs), she said. IEDs were also found in the French Quarter, Duncan said. "As of now, two IEDs have been found and rendered safe," she said. The FBI was also working to identify the suspect's possible associates. "We're working to ensure that there is no further threat," Duncan said. "We do not believe that Jabbar was solely responsible. We are actively running down every lead, including those of his known associates." The Sugar Bowl-- a college football playoff game-- between the University of Notre Dame and the University of Georgia, which was due to be played tonight at the Superdome in New Orleans, has been postponed to Thursday. There is a "dangerous concentration of power" developing in the United States, President Joe Biden warned Wednesday in his farewell address to the nation." An oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power, and influence that really threatens our entire democracy," he said in an address from the Oval Office. Biden, who leaves office in less than a week, used the address to reflect on his term in office as the country looks ahead to the incoming Trump administration." People should be able to make as much as they can, but play by the same rules, pay their fair share of taxes," he said. #joebiden #president #ovaloffice #primetime #farewell #pbs #pbsnews #news

On Saturday President-elect Donald Trump told NBC in a phone interview that after he takes office he will “most likely” give TikTok a 90-day reprieve from a potential ban. The extension is allowed under the bipartisan law passed last year. But on Friday the Supreme Court voted to uphold the law that would ban TikTok. While the Biden Administration has said they would not enforce the law before leaving office, the deadline of the ban is still set to take place Sunday Jan. 19. To lift the ban, the law requires TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app to a non-Chinese-buyer. As of now, TikTok says it plans to “go dark” on Sunday, unless it is given immediate clarity and assurance of non-enforcement of the app ban. While Trump may grant the app an extension on his first day in office, that still leaves one day of potential darkness for the social media app. As of now, the fate of the app and its more than 170 million U.S. users still hang in the abyss. #tiktok #tiktoknews #tiktokupdate #tiktokban #tiktikusa #tiktokbanusa #bytedance #supremecourt #donaldtrump #trumptiktok #joebiden #bidentiktok #pbsnews #newshour #pbsnewshour #tiktokbreakingnews #breakingnews #news #newstiktok #tiktokbannews

Every type of hazard is on the table with this system," Matthew Cappucci, senior meteorologist at MyRadar, told PBS News' William Brangham. The potential for power outages and an icy mix of freezing rain, snow and sleet are among the dangerous conditions accompanying the storm. "I think a lot of folks will be seeing pretty significant disruptions for quite some time," Cappucci said. #pbsnewshour #pbsnews #newshour #snow #storm #snowstorm #blizzard #stateofemergency #winter #winterstorm #weather #weatherreport #news

Scott Bessent, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to run the Treasury Department, told senators Thursday that extending tax cuts that are set to expire at the end of 2025 is “the single most important economic issue of the day.” “This is pass-fail,” Bessent said, warning that “if we do not fix these tax cuts, if we do not renew and extend, then we will be facing an economic calamity. And, as always with financial instability, that falls on the middle and working-class people.” The comments from Bessent, a billionaire hedge fund manager, came during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Finance Committee. He was asked about the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which was enacted during Trump’s first term and made major changes to the tax code for individuals and businesses. Democrats on the committee argued during the hearing that if Trump extended parts of the law past this year, the wealthiest taxpayers would benefit while the $36 trillion national debt would grow. #pbsnewshour #pbsnews #newshour #trumpadministration #senate #congress #capitolhill #government #news #taxes #taxcuts #economics #taxcode #finance
On a recent night at the Boston Opera House, audiences braved New England's chill for a beloved Christmas tradition: "The Nutcracker." The Boston Ballet has performed the holiday classic every year for nearly six decades, even virtually in 2020, when performances across the country were forced online by COVID.But this season marks a first. The wooden toy that later transforms into a dashing prince is traditionally white. But Daniel Durrett, one of several dancers cast as the titular nutcracker, is dancing in a costume that matches his skin tone. “When they presented the new head, it was just so special. I felt seen,”” Durrett said. #pbs #news #music #pbsnews

Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office to Donald Trump Monday. As he was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States, Trump did not place his hand on the Bible, which was held by first lady Melania Trump at his side. The inauguration ceremony, including the swearings-in, is taking place indoors this year, a last-minute change to the pomp and circumstance due to extreme cold forecasted for the nation’s capital. When Trump returns to the White House on Monday, he’s expected to act quickly on his campaign promises and roll back his predecessor’s policies. As his second term begins, his party controls both chambers of Congress and conservative justices have a majority on the Supreme Court. Trump is only the second president to return to office in non-consecutive terms, the only president convicted of a felony and the oldest person to win election to the White House. #pbs #news #pbsnews #politics #trump #inauguration
