White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday that the Trump administration’s freeze on federal funding to a variety of programs is a “temporary pause” and will not affect individual assistance. “If you are receiving individual assistance from the federal government, you will still continue to receive that,” Leavitt said during her first briefing ever in the White House press room. “However, it is the responsibility of this president and this administration to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars.” In a memo issued Monday night, Matthew Vaeth, acting director of the Office of Management and Budget, said federal agencies would be required to “identify and review all federal financial assistance programs and supporting activities consistent with the president's policies and requirements.” As part of the review, all federal grants and loans would be paused starting Tuesday at 5 p.m. Eastern. “The use of Federal resources to advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve,” Vaeth wrote. The move created confusion and has the potential to affect ongoing health care research, education programs and other initiatives that rely on federal funding, such as Meals on Wheels. After the briefing, Leavitt addressed reports that a website used by states to get Medicaid payments is offline. “We have confirmed no payments have been affected — they are still being processed and sent,” she wrote on social media. “We expect the portal will be back online shortly.” #news #pbsnews #pbs #politics #trump

Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., questioned Kash Patel on Thursday in his confirmation hearing for FBI director. In his second round of questioning, Schiff pushed Patel to share what he testified to a grand jury about President Donald Trump's handling of classified documents at his private residence, Mar-a-Lago. "Mr. Patel may be the first nominee for FBI director in history who felt it necessary to plead the Fifth," Schiff said.Schiff also criticized Patel's nomination." How can any of us think that, that his background, his qualifications, hold a candle to the people who went before him? How did we get here where we are defending a nominee like this?" Schiff said. Patel appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee. A loyal Trump supporter, Patel is a former public defender turned Justice Department prosecutor. He served in President Donald Trump’s first term as chief of staff to acting defense secretary Christopher Miller. In interviews, he has said he wants to reduce the size of the national intelligence community, and shut down the FBI’s headquarters in Washington. He’s also repeated the false narrative that Trump won the 2020 election. #kashpatel #confirmationhearing #trump #donaldtrump #trumpnomination #nationalintelligence #pbsnewshour #newshour #pbsnews #trumpadministration #senatejudiciarycommittee #fbi #fbidirector #schiff #adamschiff
GOP Rep. David Schweikert of Arizona criticized Republican plans for the national debt and spending cuts on the House floor Friday, urging Congress to avoid a "financial armageddon." In a passionate speech, Schweikert emphasized the difficulty of cutting federal spending and that current plans to go after certain programs that are oft discussed by members of his party aren't going to change the financial landscape as much as promised." If you get rid of the Department of Education salaries ... you just covered nine hours of borrowing," he said. He also added that eliminating foreign aid would only cover a week of borrowing. "Am I starting to make a point on the scale of what we have to actually tell the truth and deal with," he asked. This is against the landscape that President Donald Trump has centered federal spending in the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, led by Elon Musk. #gop #republican #federalworkers #news #doge #trump #pbs #pbsnews
President Donald Trump suggested that the Federal Aviation Administration’s diversity efforts may have played a role in a midair collision Wednesday night near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Trump, citing the FAA’s hiring plan, said it included consideration for people with hearing and vision issues, among other disabilities. He said the FAA had also believed their workforce was “too white.” There is an ongoing investigation into the crash and officials have not yet found what led to the disaster. Trump was asked by a reporter how he came to the conclusion that diversity had something to do with the crash.“Because I have common sense,” he said, “and unfortunately a lot of people don’t.” #planecrash #dca #trump #DEI #pbsnews #pbs

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President Donald Trump's pick for secretary of Health and Human Services, testified Wednesday before the Senate Finance Committee. Kennedy, an environmental lawyer, faced questions about his stance on Medicaid, abortion rights, COVID and public health insurance and vaccines. Democrats pushed Kennedy on his past statements opposing vaccines and the debunked, baseless claims that they cause autism. During the hearing, Kennedy insisted he would not restrict vaccine access and supported the childhood vaccine schedule."The only thing I want is good science," he said. Kennedy will appear before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on Thursday. #rfkjr #trump #senate #confirmation #pbs #pbsnews #news #highlights

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt pushed back against claims of a "constitutional crisis" in the Trump administration Wednesday, saying the real crisis is with judges blocking the president's "basic executive authority." "Many outlets in this room have been fearmongering the American people into believing there is a constitutional crisis taking place here at the White House ... but in fact the real constitutional crisis is taking place within our judicial branch," she said at a White House press briefing. President Donald Trump has taken steps to overhaul the federal government, but his efforts have been met with more than 50 lawsuits and with judges, so far, temporarily blocking some of his proposals. Top Trump administration officials, including billionaire Elon Musk and Vice President JD Vance, have questioned and criticized the judiciary’s authority to serve as a check on executive power. "Seventy seven million Americans voted to elect this president, and each injunction is an abuse of the rule of law and an attempt to thwart the will of the people," Leavitt said. America's democracy was built on a system of checks and balances with a fundamental principle of separation of powers. The courts and Congress have served a long-standing check on the presidency. Leavitt said the administration would comply with court rulings, but added that they would continue to work to overturn those injunctions. #pbsnewshour #pbsnews #newshour #news #trump #donaldtrump #trumpadministration #courts #constituiton #whitehouse #democracy #judicialsystem

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Monday that he is the acting director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) but he also delegated the authority to someone else. Rubio’s comments, during a visit to El Salvador, come as employees at the agency were directed to stay out of USAID’s Washington, D.C., headquarters on Monday and Elon Musk said earlier in the day that he and President Donald Trump “agreed we should shut [USAID] down.” “There are a lot of functions of USAID that are going to continue, that are going to be part of American foreign policy. But it has to be aligned with American foreign policy,” Rubio told reporters. “Our goal was to go in and align our foreign aid to the national interest.” He said his frustration with the agency dated back to his time in Congress. “It’s a completely unresponsive agency,” Rubio said. “It’s supposed to respond to policy directives of the State Department, and it refuses to do so.” President John F. Kennedy created USAID in 1961. According to the agency’s archived website from the first Trump administration, “USAID leads international development and humanitarian efforts to save lives, reduce poverty, strengthen democratic governance and help people progress beyond assistance.” Laura Barrón-López explains what we know now about the future of the agency in the second Trump administration. #USAID#elon#elonmusk#presidenttrump#trump#news#pbs#pbsnews

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked during a press briefing on Friday whether the Trump administration has concerns that more incidents like Wednesday night’s midair collision between an Army helicopter and a commercial jet could happen as a result of staffing issues, Trump’s “buyout” offer to federal workers or Trump's hiring freeze of new federal workers. Leavitt, building upon the administration’s past comments and recently implemented policies that they say emphasize merit in hiring practices over diversity and equity, said the president is "intent on ensuring that we are increasing staffing at these agencies" and that's why he signed an executive order "immediately terminating DEI hiring practices at” the Federal Aviation Administration. "When you are flying on an airplane with your loved ones, which every one of us in this room has, do you pray that your plane lands safely and gets you to your destination, or do you pray that the pilot has a certain skin color?" Leavitt told reporters in the White House briefing room. "I think we all know the answer to that question, and as President Trump said yesterday, it's common sense." Leavitt’s comments follow Trump’s suggestion, without supporting evidence, on Thursday that the FAA's diversity efforts may have played a role in the collision, which killed 67 people. Former air safety officials have criticized the White House for speculating on the cause of the accident before an investigation is completed and for implying that DEI efforts make air travel unsafe. The New York Times reported that, according to an internal preliminary FAA safety report about the crash, staffing levels at Ronald Reagan National Airport’s air traffic control tower were “not normal for the time of day and volume of traffic.” #news #pbsnews #pbs #politics #trump

Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency has been at the forefront of upheaval and mass firings at federal agencies, even as lawsuits challenge their actions along with the executive orders of President Donald Trump. “I can't tell you how many conversations I have over the last three weeks of people who are traumatized, who describe a reign of terror in their agencies, but not only that, a reign of incompetence,” New York Times columnist David Brooks told PBS News Hour’s Amna Nawaz on Friday. "Nobody knows what information they have access to." So far, thousands of federal employees have been fired from numerous agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Energy Department, U.S. Forest Service and Veterans Affairs.“ It's a form of psychological intimidation that is sweeping through agency after agency and making a government that is semi-functional,” Brooks said. #pbsnewshour #pbsnews #newshour #trumpadministration #trump #donaldtrump #doge #elonmusk #government #federalgovernment

Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., was one of several Democratic senators who pressed FBI director nominee Kash Patel during his Thursday confirmation hearing on whether his loyalty was with law enforcement or people who attacked them at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Following other questions about Patel’s involvement with the “J6 choir,” which included offenders who assaulted officers that day, Schiff asked for more specific details on the nominee’s role with this group. Patel told senators he was not familiar with individual members of the choir. In a 2023 Truth Social post, he described the choir as "individuals who have been incarcerated as a result of their involvement" in the attack. The two had a contentious exchange. At one point, Schiff told Patel to turn around and face the Capitol Police officers in attendance for his hearing. “Look at them!” Schiff said. “I want you to look at them if you can, if you have the courage to look them in the eye, Mr. Patel, and tell them you're proud of what you did. Tell them you're proud that you raised money off of people that assaulted their colleagues, that pepper sprayed them, that beat them with poles.” Patel didn’t turn around and said, “I've never, never ever accepted violence against law enforcement.” In a different part of the hearing, Patel said he disagreed with President Donald Trump's pardon of Jan. 6 offenders who committed violent acts against police. A loyal Trump supporter, Patel is a former public defender turned Justice Department prosecutor. He served in Trump’s first term as chief of staff to acting defense secretary Christopher Miller.
