Are you finding yourself saying “you know better than that!” more, now that it’s cold outside? ❄️❄️ Even when little kids “know better,” it’s pretty tough for them to access the thinking part of their brain when they’re dysregulated. Giving them adequate sensory input can help them stay regulated so they can access the thinking part of their brain. Tips to get in active play inside: 🐻Bear crawling ⚖️Tip-toeing across a balance beam made from painter’s tape 🐇Jumping with two feet between two parallel lines made from painter’s tape 🛋️Crashing onto couch cushions! As you work more sensory input into your little’s day, they’ll start to realize the regulation benefits. My two-year-olds will say “my need a crash!” #momlife #sensory #pedsot #toddlermom
Can your little do these? 👟On average, shoe tying is mastered by age 6. Shoe tying is actually a lot harder than adults realize-it involves visual-motor skills, bilateral coordination and a lot of hand dexterity! 📝Around age 4, many kiddos are writing their own name from memory! This is a skill that takes a lot of practice (and kids will learn faster if we make that practice fun.) ✂️Around age 5, kiddos are able to use childsafe scissors to cut out simple shapes from construction paper (with supervision). One if the best ways to introduce scissor skills is by snipping play dough with plastic scissors. 🔤6 year olds can write the alphabet (in uppercase AND lowercase) from memory-kids are incredible. 🧥Around age 5, kids are able to connect and zip the zipper on their jacket (with practice)! #milestones #pedsot #momlife

Did you have any Christmas tantrums today? Dysregulation over winter break is more of a “when” than an “if.” Being out of routine and overstimulation from excitement are two of the most common reasons for tantrums over the holidays. Here are a few things we can do to help: 🧹Decrease visual clutter by putting away as many of the new toys as possible, letting your little focus on one at a time. If they ask for one that is away, feel free to trade that one in! 🧶Add in some structured activities to break up their free play. A whole day of free play is a big ask for a little who is used to having school or other activities to keep them busy. #momlife #toddlermom #pedsot
A tear filled day as a pediatric occupational therapist🥹 Vision can impact SO many things! If you have concerns for your child’s vision - consult with your pediatrician & vision specialist! 👀 #pedsot #occupationaltherapy
What was your favorite gift your little got this year? Little kids need THREE HOURS a day of active play to support emotional regulation and brain growth! It can be really tough to find ways for active play in the winter months here, so I love finding options for calming sensory input that we can do inside (and don’t take up a ton of space). This one was a late addition from santa, I saw an ad for it and thought “we have to have this 😂. But it paired perfectly with the secondhand sit n spin we bought. 3 month milestones from a mom and Peds OT 🌈 Milestones are markers that indicate a child's development. They help assess growth and help to identify where a child may need additional support. It is important to remember that variations are normal 🫶🏽 #momtok #3monthsold #development #pedsot #milestones #3monthmilestone #3montholdbaby #newbornbaby #newborn
Are you ending winter break with…..more snow days? 😅❄️ Kids’ brains need the right types of sensory input to help keep them emotionally regulated, which is part of why we can see LOTS of dysregulation on snow days (in addition to being way out of routine). Here are some easy activities we can work in to help! 🍩Play dough & kinetic sand are great for calming input to the hands. Using tools that go along with these can increase the sensory input AND add a goal-directed component, which can help regulation! 🛝 Swinging and sliding are regulating because they give the brain linear vestibular input. Kids can also get this from toys that rock, or just rocking back and forth on their bottom on carpet! 🧩Puzzles are a great, quiet, goal-directed activity. Just make sure the challenge is low if your child isn’t used to puzzles. (We don’t want to place a high demand on top of dysregulation.) Once they master the easier puzzle, introduce a harder one. #pedsot #momlife #preschoolactivities #toddlermom #sensory #emotionalregulation

Honest Review of the @Lovevery Playmat from a Peds OT and mom of 3. I personally love this Playmat and this is an item that will last with all your kiddos. This is not sponsored. When researching what items I wanted on my baby registry, I wanted to make sure that it would target development and be worth it. I absolutely love this Playmat and think it is part of the essentials. #newborn #3monthsold #beingamom #playmat #babyregistry #babyregistrymusthaves #development #pedsot #momtok
