A Portland man who hopped into the cab of an idling tow truck and took off — as a Retriever Towing employee clung on for dear life — is fighting a half-dozen felony charges as a trial began Monday. Prosecutors say Eric Clayson Streitzel, 38, reached speeds of 85 mph during the July 10, 2023, alleged hijacking, which began when he got into the truck on the east end of the Steel Bridge, wove through Old Town and then sped up on Interstates 405 and 5. In dramatic footage, the towing employee, Travis Christ, can be seen banging on the rear window of his truck, then calling a 911 dispatcher as he sat down in the truck bed. Christ told the jury he jumped on the back “by instinct” and wasn’t able to jump off, saying the four-foot high leap would not have been safe. In #Illinois, 2/3 of the state lives in/around #Chicago, the nation's 3rd largest city with nearly 3 million residents. #Chicagoland, or the Chicago #metro within Illinois, makes up 2/3 of the state's #population, leaving the remaining 1/3 of Illinois (including #MetroEast, or #Madison and #StClair #county) feeling as though their interests are not represented politically. This is parallel to the #GreaterIdaho movement, where about 2/3 of #Oregon's land area wishes to secede from #OR and join #Idaho, as Idaho's politics better represent Eastern Oregon's local interests. Now, unfortunately, in the #UnitedStates, we sorta have a problem with how we measure the 'size' of cities, since the city limits often don’t reflect the number of people who live AROUND a city, for example, the city of #Portland, #Maine, has 65,000 residents in the city itself, but the #metro has over 500,000 people. In fact, in #Delaware, #Vermont, and #WestVirginia, there are metro's above 100k (namely #Wilmington #DE, #Burlington #VT, and #Charleston and #Huntington #WV, respectively), whereas #Wyoming is the only state to arguably not have one, as the #Cheyenne metro (which is just #Laramie #County) only hit 100k in the last few years or so. #California, the most populous state, has the most cities this size at 75, naturally followed by the next most populous states of #Texas with 43, #Florida with 27, and #NewYork with 16, while #Arizona sneaks in at #5 thanks to the #Phoenix #metroarea having so many absurdly large suburbs. #Colorado is quite similar, as the #Denver metro has 8 suburbs over 100k.
