Can you believe it’s almost the end of the year?! December is truly a time for celebrations, and Departure is one of the most iconic spots in Portland for festive gatherings. Located on top of The Nines Hotel, they are currently more than halfway through their annual Duck Month where they serve a Peking Duck Experience! 🦆 Thank you to Departure for inviting me and gifting me this meal! #gifted Peking duck is one of those special dishes that can be challenging to find in Portland. Departure goes a step further by turning it into an entire multi-course experience! It begins with a warm duck bone broth accompanied by chanterelles. Next, you enjoy the Peking duck served with classic accompaniments like green onion, cucumber, and hoisin sauce. This is paired with a slightly spicy duck fried rice. The meal concludes with a deliciously rich and creamy duck fat coconut ice cream. It’s truly a wonderful and classy experience! When it comes to food and wine pairings, most people think about the dish first and then choose a wine to complement it. However, at Parallel, they've taken a wine-first approach and flipped that idea on its head. I've been feeling quite chilly these past few days—it really feels like winter is almost here! One of my favorite comfort foods during this time of year is Vietnamese cuisine. While I've had many classic dishes like phở and bánh mì, I haven't explored many northern Vietnamese dishes. Thăng Long Cuisine is a hidden gem that specializes in the cuisine of northern Vietnam, particularly the kind you would find in Hanoi. 🍲 Thank you to Thăng Long Cuisine for inviting me and gifting me this meal! #gifted Bún chả has recently become one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes, and their version is outstanding. It features grilled fatty pork served alongside rice noodles and a generous plate of fresh herbs. The broth, reminiscent of fish sauce dipping sauce, is absolutely delicious. They also offer chả cá Lã Vọng, which is a grilled fish served with a flavorful shrimp paste sauce. There are so many unique and amazing dishes on the menu, but they also have the classic Vietnamese favorites to fall back on.
