It has become a tradition here at the Sacramento History Museum to send out holiday cards to our donors and supporters of our institution. These 2024 holiday cards (250 this year) were printed using one of our printing presses we have on display in our print shop exhibit, the 10x15 Chandler & Price Gordon-style jobbing press that was manufactured in Cleveland, Ohio in 1902. In this video, Howard demonstrates inking the press and operating the press recorded from different camera angles. This video was filmed in segments as Howard printed the inside text of the card in rhodamine red rubber base ink. The front of the card was printed in a previous press run. The text reads, “In this season of giving, we thank you for your support. You bring history to life, create memories and preserve Sacramento's rich stories. May wonder and discovery fill your holidays. The Staff and Directors of The Sacramento History Museum.” The font is 24 point Caslon to match the typeface of the outside of the card.

The NBA basketball season is underway and we here at the Sacramento History Museum are, of course, rooting for the home team! In honor of the Beam Team, Howard letterpress printed something for the @Sacramento Kings. We had to get out some large wood type that was made in the late 1880s by the Hamilton Wood Type Company for this occasion. The typeface is French Clarendon. The text reads “GO KINGS LIGHT THE BEAM!” The beam appears over the Golden 1 Center when the Kings win. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, made in 1852.

It has become a tradition here at the Sacramento History Museum to send out holiday cards to our donors and supporters of our institution. These holiday cards (300 this year) were printed using one of our printing presses we have on display in our print shop exhibit, the 10x15 Chandler & Price Gordon-style jobbing press that was manufactured in Cleveland, Ohio in 1902. While many visitors, especially school children who have visited during a school program, may have seen how this press operates, not many people get to see all the steps involved in the printing process. In this video, Howard and Jared demonstrate inking the press and operating the press recorded from different camera angles. This video was filmed in segments as Howard and Jared printed the front and back cover of the card with green rubber base ink. The front of the card includes an image of a valley oak tree. The text reads, “Have a TREE-mendous Holiday Season!” This was set in 30 point Caslon font. The back of the card is a photo engraving of our museum’s monogram and the text, “Printed at the Sacramento History Museum” in also 30 point Caslon font.

Rolling out some Pantone Red Pepper oil base ink with a brayer on the ink stone in preparation for some letterpress printing in the print shop exhibit at the Sacramento History Museum. As Howard demonstrates, this is done to create an even layer of ink on the ink stone and brayer. The remaining ink at the top of the stone will gradually be rolled out as we’re printing. Oil base ink can remain up to a couple hours on the ink stone before drying.

Replying to @johnholgren We often demonstrate a lot of printing in our print shop exhibit at the Sacramento History Museum, but not many people get to see the cleaning process. In this video, Jared shows the full cleaning process sped up a bit because the full video is almost 11 minutes long. We use 1K kerosene as a solvent to clean the ink off of our 10x15 Chandler & Price Gordon-style jobbing press. This was after a press run where we letterpress printed 250 copies for our 2024 museum holiday card with rhodamine red rubber base ink for the inside text of the card. Cleaning is always a long and laborious task but we hope you enjoy the video!

On December 15, 1935, the Tower Bridge opened in Sacramento, California. The bridge is still one of the most iconic and photographed landmarks in our city. In this video, Jared letterpress printed with some orange oil base ink. What was printed using a 3x5 Kelsey tabletop printing press is an image from a photo engraving depicting the Tower Bridge in the late 1930s with the Delta King steamboat passing underneath the raised bridge. This print is available in our Museum Store and website as part of our “Sacramento Prints” bundle.

Sometimes we find printing items online and want to see who they’d turn out in our print shop at the Sacramento History Museum. This large linocut was recently acquired and Jared wanted to see how letterpress printing it would turn out, especially for some personal holiday cards. The print is of Snoopy, Woodstock, and a Christmas tree. This was printed using a 4x6 Golding Official No. 2 tabletop printing press. Fifty prints were printed on this press run using opaque white rubber base ink.

Looking for a unique holiday card to accompany a gift this season? We are building up a variety of different greeting/holiday cards available in our museum store! In this video, Jared letterpress printed greeting cards with green rubber base ink. This press run involved printing 50 cards using a 3x5 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop printing press. The front of the card was printed using a stock photo engraving that would be available in many letterpress printing offices and this cut was made 60-70 years ago. The image is of some Christmas greenery and a candle. The text “Happy Holidays!” Is 30 point Engravers Old English font. The back of the card includes an image of a Washington hand press and the words “Printed at the Sacramento History Museum.”

We have been preparing a wide variety of letterpress printed greeting cards to have available in our museum store and website. Known also as the “Festival of Lights,” we now have a Hanukkah card! For this video, Jared shows the letterpress printing process to print the card. The phrase, “Happy Hanukkah!” was typeset with 24 point Caslon font. The image of a menorah is from a linoleum cut made by a local linocut artist. This was printed with blue rubber base ink using a 3x5 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop printing press.

There are many phrases we live by but overtime we might forget their origins. In letterpress printing, a compositor (also known as a typesetter) is setting type upside down and left to right. However, many of the letters look very similar to each other. It is best to focus on the task at hand. That’s how you get the origin of the phrase “b’s and d’s you could also lose, if you don’t mind your p’s and q’s.” In this video, Jared typesets and letterpress prints that phrase with green rubber base ink using a 3x5 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop printing press. This was typeset in 24 point Caslon font and this is close to the maximum size of impression you can make with this press.

We have reached a new social media milestone on one of our platforms and all of us at the Sacramento History Museum continue to be in disbelief of our viewership. We would have never thought that our institution, a small nonprofit museum in Sacramento, California, could reach this many people from around the world, but we are incredibly thankful for all of those who take the time to watch our videos and for your support. In this video, Howard letterpress printed a headline announcing “Sacramento History Museum Reaches 850,000 lnstagram Followers” while using our Washington hand press, which was manufactured in 1852! The wood type for the headline is 6 line Gothic font. Folks, we are on the road to one million!

January 8th is World Typing Day! This day celebrates the printed form of communication that ensures speed, accuracy, and efficiency over hand writing. For today, Howard shows the full letterpress printing process from the type case to the printed proof. The first portion is setting the type in a composing stick from the California job case. The font selected is 30 point Caslon. The second portion of the video is building the form in the chase and locking everything in place using furniture and quoins. The last portion is Howard printing “World Typing Day!” This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852.
