The NBA basketball season is underway and we here at the Sacramento History Museum are, of course, rooting for the home team! In honor of the Beam Team, Howard letterpress printed something for the @Sacramento Kings. We had to get out some large wood type that was made in the late 1880s by the Hamilton Wood Type Company for this occasion. The typeface is French Clarendon. The text reads “GO KINGS LIGHT THE BEAM!” The beam appears over the Golden 1 Center when the Kings win. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, made in 1852. #SacHistoryMuseum #NBA #basketball #typography #nbaseason #sacramentokings #museum #history #sacramento #asmr #printingpress #letterpress #printing

What would you call this? The name for this printing and binding artifact is a little odd, in my opinion. There are many phrases we live by but overtime we might forget their origins. In letterpress printing, a compositor (also known as a typesetter) is setting type upside down and left to right. However, many of the letters look very similar to each other. It is best to focus on the task at hand. That’s how you get the origin of the phrase “b’s and d’s you could also lose, if you don’t mind your p’s and q’s.” In this video, Jared typesets and letterpress prints that phrase with green rubber base ink using a 3x5 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop printing press. This was typeset in 24 point Caslon font and this is close to the maximum size of impression you can make with this press. #SacHistoryMuseum #typography #idioms #idiom #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #asmr #printing

January 8th is World Typing Day! This day celebrates the printed form of communication that ensures speed, accuracy, and efficiency over hand writing. For today, Howard shows the full letterpress printing process from the type case to the printed proof. The first portion is setting the type in a composing stick from the California job case. The font selected is 30 point Caslon. The second portion of the video is building the form in the chase and locking everything in place using furniture and quoins. The last portion is Howard printing “World Typing Day!” This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. #SacHistoryMuseum #WorldTypingDay #typing #museum #sacramento #letterpress #asmr #printing #printingpress #history

We have reached a new social media milestone on one of our platforms and all of us at the Sacramento History Museum continue to be in disbelief of our viewership. We would have never thought that our institution, a small nonprofit museum in Sacramento, California, could reach this many people from around the world, but we are incredibly thankful for all of those who take the time to watch our videos and for your support. In this video, Howard letterpress printed a headline announcing “Sacramento History Museum Reaches 850,000 lnstagram Followers” while using our Washington hand press, which was manufactured in 1852! The wood type for the headline is 6 line Gothic font. Folks, we are on the road to one million! #SacHistoryMuseum #typography #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #asmr #printing #printmaking

Letterpress printing thank you greeting cards with blue rubber base ink. This ink is a mix of reflex blue and opaque white ink. The font is Balloon 60 point. The image of a shouting man is from an electrotype made in the 1930s. The cut is from the Bill Gaylord Collection. Fifty cards were printed in this press run using a 3x5 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop printing press. These cards are available in our museum store! We here at the Sacramento History Museum have a lot to be thankful for this past year and we appreciate all of your support! #SacHistoryMuseum #thankyou #typography #blue #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #asmr #printing
Mixing and rolling out bright purple rubber base ink with a brayer on the ink stone in preparation for some letterpress printing in the print shop exhibit at the Sacramento History Museum. This ink was made from mixing opaque white and purple rubber base ink. As Jared demonstrates, this is done to create an even layer of ink on the ink stone and the brayer. The remaining ink at the top of the stone will gradually be rolled out throughout the day as we’re printing. Rubber base ink is a very slow drying ink that can last all day on the ink stone and not dry. This was the closest purple we could get to the color of the beam when the @Sacramento Kings win. They have won 7 games in a row! #SacHistoryMuseum #purple #sacramentokings #lightthebeam #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #asmr #oddlysatisfying #printing
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the staff, docents, and volunteers at the Sacramento History Museum! For today, Howard letterpress printed, with the help of @Santa Claus 🎅🏻 ✨❄️, “MERRY CHRISTMAS” using some 12 line pica sized wood type in the Latin typeface. This type was made over 130 years ago by the Hamilton Wood Type Company. This was printed with rhodamine red rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. #SacHistoryMuseum #christmas #merrychristmas #happyholidays #typography #santajclaus #museum #sacramento #printing #printingpress
As the new year approaches, it’s time to get all those unfinished projects completed. That’s why the last working day of the year, December 31st this year on New Year’s Eve, is National No Interruptions Day! In this video, Howard tries to get a lot of work done around the print shop at the Sacramento History Museum. With it also being New Year’s Eve, Howard letterpress printed an electrotype (copy of a woodcut) of tempus fugit from the Lewis Winter Collection. This cut was made 125-130 years ago. The print depicts Father Time and the text included is “Time Flies.” We want to thank you for joining us this past year as we’ve shared Sacramento history with you all. We hope you stick with us in 2025! #SacHistoryMuseum #newyears #newyearseve #nye2024 #timeflies #bye2024 #NoInterruptionsDay #sacramento #museum #historytok #printingpress #asmr #printing

January 20th this year is MLK Day! Today we remember and honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. as a Civil Rights leader and activist. On October 16, 1967, less than 6 months before his assassination, King spoke at the campus stadium at Sacramento State College (now known today as California State University, Sacramento) on the subject of inequalities in education and economic justice for the lower class in the United States in a campaign later called the “Poor People’s Campaign of 1968.” About 6,000 people attended this speech. For today, Jared discussed MLK’s speech in Sacramento and letterpress printed a quote from MLK in 1963. The quote is, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere... Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” This was typeset in 30 point Caslon font. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. #SacHistoryMuseum #MLKDay #MLK #martinlutherkingday #typography #sacramentostate #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #printing @Sacramento State

December 24th is National Eggnog Day! The true origins of the beverage are debated but it dates back to Medieval Europe from a spiced warm milk and ale beverage known as posset. Eggnog was considered a drink of the aristocracy as it combined many different ingredients considered more expensive, especially during the winter, such as eggs, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg all mixed with milk. It was quite popular to send the beverage to newspaper offices, apparently, as the Sacramento Daily Union often thanked the individuals (often saloon owners) for bringing by eggnog for the printers and typesetters. It was probably an offer of thanks for their hard work setting type and publishing the newspaper during the holidays. The Bank Exchange at Second and K Streets apparently “acquired to perfection” eggnog according to the Union on Christmas in 1864. With the big holiday approaching, enjoy a nice glass of the historic and traditional holiday beverage. For today, Jared letterpress printed an important question. That question was typeset in 60 point Cheltenham Bold font. The text reads, “Do you like Eggnog? YES or NO.” This was printed with rhodamine red rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. Do you enjoy eggnog or prefer a different wintertime beverage? #sachistorymuseum #nationaleggnogday #eggnog #typography #christmaseve #christmas #happyholidays #merrychristmas #letterpress #museum #sacramento #printing #printingpress
