Part two of the "Parenting Healthy Boys" collaborative series ✨ How can you best support your son when he has interests outside of traditional gender norms? Here are some tips to guide and empower him: 1️⃣ Celebrate his interests. Whether it’s nail polish or dollhouses, show him his hobbies are valued. Maybe take up the interest with him as a way to spend time together! 2️⃣ Prepare him for questions or scrutiny. Role play with him and practice responses like, “It’s just something I enjoy!” or “Everyone has different interests, that’s what makes us special!” This builds his confidence. 3️⃣ Introduce role models. Share inspiring stories of people who followed their passions, and especially of boys and men who live outside the confines of the “Man Box” (many accounts tagged here). 4️⃣ Advocate when necessary. Teach others that individuality is a strength, not a flaw, if they try to criticize or comment on your son’s interests.. 5️⃣ Encourage his confidence. Teach him to stand tall, smile, and be proud of his choices. Be sure to check out Scott Stuart’s book "My Shadow is Pink," a fun, rhyming story meant to inspire boys to bravely express their most authentic selves. 🩷 Let’s raise boys who feel empowered to embrace who they truly are!
