To celebrate this holiday, I wanted to share one of my grandfather Clayton Spicer’s paintings of a magnificent Snowy Owl, done in the 1940’s. The Owl sees and knows the truth. It's ability to navigate through the darkest night and bring back nourishment for itself and others is the foundation of this essence. When you have lost your way, owl essence will guide you back to your proper path and wisdom. Because of its keen eyesight the owl is considered to be a great visionary. The Owl can take us beyond fears, for Owl sees far into the future and knows that even after the darkest night there is a new dawn that is approaching. My grandfather was a dedicated artist. I have a very early memory of sitting on his knee, age 3, painting leaves on the trees of one of his paintings. “Claytie,” as we called him, was a masterful painter who had studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Art Students League in New York City with Robert Henri, author of The Art Spirit and the founder of the Ashcan School of American art. We have many of his wonderful paintings hanging in our home, and I love to gaze upon his brushstrokes of the sky, the trees, the mountains, following his vision….
