One of the more challenging parts of the salt business if I had to be honest is know when to pretreat and when to post treat. We've had a lot of "right there" snow events so far in Michigan, bordering between the wintry/sleet mix, 31/33 degree temperature snow events, and so much more. Understanding the science between surface temps, air temps, refreeze conditions, and so much more have required a lot of extra mental work to dial it in. While we do our best to make educated guesses, sometimes the good old weather rock wins out, and we have to trust our own eyes, not just the weather data. How much salt do we use on an average salt run? It depends! We have noticed quite a bit of range due to the different weather and site conditions we're taking care of. Some days were able to take care of a dusting with just a few tons for the route, other days when we are post treating or dealing with a wintry ice mix, we've gone through as much as 8 to 10 tons.
