It’s a natural feeling to want to translate to your students but when over used, can do more harm than good. 🚨We need to fight the urge… Here’s the thing:
🚫 Translating creates dependency.
🚫 Translating doesn’t build oracy or biliteracy.
🚫 Translating wastes valuable instructional time because you have to say things twice! 🚫Translating gives students the green light to tune you out so they can wait for you to give Instead, focus on strategies that actually develop language:
✅ Purposeful bridging between languages.
✅ Engaging students in oracy activities to build confidence and fluency.
✅ Use strategies like el dictado to connect literacy in both languages. ✅Provide students with word banks, preview vocabulary, sentence stems, repetition, images Dual language instruction isn’t about saying the same thing twice—it’s about making language accessible so they can grow into biliterate humans. If you are finding it hard to fight the urge to translate, I can help🙌🏽
