On December 28, 1973, the U.S. Endangered Species Act was signed into law, marking a pivotal step in protecting critically endangered species from extinction. 🐢💙 The Texas State Aquarium is proud to be part of this ongoing mission, having rescued, rehabilitated, and released countless endangered sea turtles, including Kemp’s Ridley, Green, and Loggerhead sea turtles. On Friday, December 27, we received a very special delivery from the New England Aquarium: 18 critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles that made an incredible 2,000-mile journey from Cape Cod to Corpus Christi. ✈️🐢 These turtles were cold-stunned on Cape Cod beaches, battling hypothermia, pneumonia, and injuries caused by rough surf. With New England rehabilitation centers at capacity, Texas stepped up to provide them a second chance at life. This rescue is also a homecoming—many of these juvenile turtles likely hatched on Texas or Tamaulipas beaches. As they recover at the Texas State Aquarium, our dedicated teams are working to prepare them for their return to their natural habitat 🌊 Today, as we reflect on this important milestone in conservation, we celebrate by stepping into action. By rescuing and rehabilitating endangered sea turtles, we’re doing everything we can to ensure these vulnerable creatures have a fighting chance. Together, we are proving that actions speak louder than words when it comes to saving endangered species. 💙 A huge thank you to the New England Aquarium, @turtlesfly2, NOAA Fisheries, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and everyone who made this life-saving mission possible. Let’s keep working together for a brighter future. And now, you can see these sea turtles up close at our Center for Wildlife Rescue, open Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is donation-based, and everyone is welcome to come learn about their journey and the vital conservation work being done.
