It was common in those days for Walt Disney to pay bonuses for good ideas that the animators came up with if they ended up using it in the film. I donāt know if it was negligence or finances that kept Adriana in particular from being paid for this idea for Snow White, but I always picture the poor girl eating cold sandwiches as everyone else in the studio went off to lunch š This story comes from an interview with Adriana Caselotti conducted by David Johnson (date unknown). Here is her exact account: āI remember that Disney said, āIām taking you to lunch,ā so I went with him. We went across the street. It was a sort of a nice little restaurant. So we went in to have lunch and it was a very nice lunch and it was fifty cents. He said, āSee, Adriana, how inexpensive this is. You can eat here every time.ā But he didnāt know I didnāt have the fifty cents. When mother would give me a candy bar I didnāt haveā¦ We had no money. If she could make a sandwich, sheād make a sandwich and I would eat the sandwich at Disneyās, but they didnāt know I had no money to go across the street. If I had the nickel to come home, it was great, but if I didnāt have it, [Walt] took me home a couple of times. I think he knew that I was pretty broke, so heād offer to take me home, and this was when he said to me one day, āYou know, if you come up with any ideas that are good, I would certainly enjoy that, because we could use that and then I would give you five dollars.ā And [one day] I was on the set and he happened to be there. So I walked over to him and I said, āIf you could get a bird to imitate me, we would do something likeā¦ā And I had the exact melody and he used it exactly: [sings ahhhhhhh]. āBut then I thought of the skeletons in Snow Whiteās Scary Adventures. The whole dungeon scene was leftover from a lost concept from the feature film, where the Evil Queen chained up the prince in her dungeon after he refused to marry her. Ken Anderson had pulled the forgotten storyboard keyframes and used them to concoct a dark dungeon for us to ride through, horrifyingly ghoulish but adding all the drama Walt wanted for the ride. And thatās when I realized why Walt wanted us to be scared. Because our fear could either keep us chained up like the skeletons in that long-forgotten attraction, or it could push us forward toward places we would never have the courage to go without it. Fear was a catalyst for changeāif we chose to lean into it rather than run away.ā - From my book Who the Mirror Reflects To be honest, this book is a hard one for me to talk about because it made me revisit parts of my past Iād rather leave buried and hidden. But in the process of writing, of exploring how Walt wanted us to experience the Disney parks and why, I had to face my fear of looking something ugly in the face and deciding not to back down. To move through it, feel it, and come out a new person on the other side. It was scary. And painful. And liberating. Imagine if Disneyās attractions didnāt ever have moments of fear or uncertainty. If they were all as pleasant as the Storybookland Canal Boats. Walt knew we needed rides with drama, craziness, and beauty, so he asked his animators-turned-imagineers to give him three (almost four, but thatās another story) rides that brought just that. Thereās often a lot of fear in our lives that we can let steamroll over us or paralyze us into inaction. Many choose this route, because itās easy. Safe. But when we lean into the fear of facing what holds us captive and choose to hold our ground, thatās when we are no longer held hostage. We are free. Fear is a catalyst for change, but only if you choose to make it so.
