Hydrogen peroxide should be a staple of your laundry routine. It's very inexpensive, has a ton of different uses, and is extremely easy to use. To fix yellowing, or remove a stains color, simply spray on 3% hydrogen peroxide and let it air dry inside. Don't expect to see results until about 4-8 hours later. Repeat the process as needed. It's always wise to check a garment's care label to ensure it's washable before using hydrogen peroxide, since it's 97% water. If you are unsure, test what you plan to use in a small hidden area first! For more horsepower, try using powdered oxygen bleach and hot water soaks. Sodium percarbonate creates hydrogen peroxide when exposed to hot water. This is a great strategy if you want to whiten a ton of things at once. This is a 4th generation dry cleaners guide for removing a blood stain: 1) Rinse with cold water* 2) Treat with hydrogen peroxide (an enzymatic stain remover that includes protease (enzyme that breaks down protein) will work too but is less fun and effective) 3) Wash on cold 4) INSPECT before tumble drying. If the blood stain didn't come out, we have a bit more work to do 5) Repeat steps 2 and 3 but let the HP sit on the stain for a bit longer. OR soak in hot water (140F/60C+) and powdered oxygen bleach (which creates hydrogen peroxide when exposed to water) for a few hours and rewash. 6) Enjoy your clean item :) *I did a side experiment testing 4 blood stains: two fresh (left for about two hours) and two old blood stains (a few days old). Two rinsed and washed in cold, two rinse and washed in hot. Turns out that the hot water swatches had stains remaining while the cold were completely removed. I highly recommend using COLD WATER when working on blood stains. I am aware this goes against a video I made a few years ago so please note that results have varied for me. This is how you remove an oil or grease stain using science!!! Dish soap or liquid laundry detergent is the best way to go here, basically were creating an emulsion which is a fancy way to say a mixture of two or more liquids that are usually not soluble in each other, hopefully this demo helps shows you how this works. (Keeping a spray bottle of water and liquid dish soap in the laundry room is a great addition) After pretreatment wash as recommended by the care label but make sure to inspect before tumble drying so you don't set the stain! There is often pigment in some oil that requires the use of oxygen bleach like hydrogen peroxide to correct the color. This is how you remove a tomato sauce stain using science!!! First rub away the physical bits or rinse, then grab an enzymatic stain remover. Tomatoes are mostly carbohydrates and water, so we're going to use an enzyme called amylase to break down the sugars, which make up about 4% of the tomato. (Most stain removing sprays include enzymes like amylase, protease (for protein), and lipase) These enzymes are very similar to the ones in our digestive system so give it about an hour to literally digest the stain for best results. Then wash as recommended by the care label. Make sure to inspect before tumble drying so you dont set the stain Tomatoes get their red color from lycopene, a powerful antioxidant. One of the best stain removers you can buy is a high quality liquid laundry detergent. I highly recommend keeping some in a small application or spray bottle and use as needed.
