A Motanka doll is a traditional Ukrainian folk doll made from materials like straw thread scrap fabric, and herbs. It is distinctively not sewn instead, the doll is tied together with knots, which is believed to preserve its spiritual power and connection to ancient traditions. The doll typically has no face symbolizing that it doesn’t take on a spirit or personality during its creation. The maker often makes three wishes for health, happiness and prosperity, and may place protective herbs like garlic, thyme, or basil inside dolls head for added strength. Traditionally Motanka dolls were placed in homes or fields to protect against evil spirits, and bring out good fortune. Today they continue to be cherished as symbols of protection, spiritual connection, and Ukrainian folk art.
