Let’s talk about why teachers deserve so much more than what they’re given. Let’s start with the myth of summers off. Most of us work over the summer to make ends meet because our 8-9 months of pay is divided over 12 months – stretching every dollar to make it last. Every day, we show up not just as educators, but as counselors, mentors, social workers, and sometimes even stand-in parents. We work long hours far beyond the school day – grading, lesson planning, meeting with parents, and more. And that’s just the unpaid overtime. Many of us spend our own money on classroom supplies, snacks for students who come to school hungry, and decorations to make our classrooms feel welcoming. Personally, I’ve paid for school dances, field trips, and other activities out of pocket. Yes, there are supply checks, but let’s put it into perspective: my supply check this year was $300, just like last year. Last year, I had 51 students across two classes. This year, I have 35. That $300 doesn’t even come close to covering what kids need throughout the school year. And it’s so much more than just the workload. Teachers are shaping the future – molding the minds and hearts of the next generation while navigating overcrowded classrooms, outdated resources, and systemic challenges. We’re expected to do so much, yet we’re constantly undervalued and underpaid. This isn’t just about wanting a bigger paycheck – it’s about being able to take care of ourselves in this economy. Teachers go above and beyond for their students every single day. Why would we make them feel bad for simply wanting to afford life? When you invest in teachers, you invest in students, in communities, and in a brighter future. It’s time to prioritize education and the people who make it possible. If you know a great teacher and you are reading this… Please consider reaching out to your state officials and asking for higher salaries for your teachers.
