Alcohol and blood sugars - what to look out for this NYE! It’s time to ring in the new year of 2025 (what a year it has BEEN!) But, that also may mean that you are having a drink (or two, or three, or six….) So you’ve gotta know what this will mean for your blood sugars so you can be SAFE tomorrow!
Here’s a couple things your care team SHOULD have taught you:
#1. Beer and wine may RAISE your blood sugar. Liquor likely DROPS your blood sugar. Mixed drinks can do BOTH…. So you’ve GOT to be careful on how you dose - alcohol kicks in hours later (like fat and protein) but can cause the bottom to fall out and your number to tank.
#2. If you do go dangerously low when drinking, you CANNOT use glucagon to save yourself. Your liver is too busy detoxifying alcohol, and it won’t release stored glucose…meaning you need ORAL carbs. This could be a MUCH more in depth topic, but at the very least, I wanted to give a little insight so you are SAFE. If your care team didn’t teach you these things….time for a possible change 😉
