Today in Southern labor history, we remember the founding of the Brotherhood of Timber Workers in December of 1910. At its height, membership of the Brotherhood of Timber Workers reached up to 35,000 workers about half of whom were Black. Despite being in the Jim Crow South, the union was open to workers of all races. Later in 1912, the union officially merged with the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and accepted women as members, too. Today in Southern labor history, we remember the 16-year-long struggle for a union at Smithfield Slaughterhouse in Tar Heel, North Carolina. The struggle at Smithfield began in 1994 when workers there won their first opportunity to vote for a union with the @ufcwunion. Workers lost initially and would go on to vote and fail again in 1997. In both cases, management used a number of tactics, from firing union organizers to using police violence to weaponizing ICE agents against union organizers. Smithfield was committed to using any means necessary to keep their workers from winning their union. Escalating violence and union busting tactics from Smithfield increased in severity from 1997 on. At one point, Smithfield plant security, Danny Priest, became a deputy Sheriff and gave plant security the right to arrest and detain Smithfield workers at work. The company maintained a holding area for detainees in a trailer on company property, which workers called the “company jail.” Despite all they were up against, the workers and the UFCW did not back down. The Smithfield workers organized a boycott within their community and even allied with environmental groups to raise awareness about Smithfield's trend of pollution. Meanwhile, the UFCW fought on legal ground getting courts to rule that Smithfield would have to rehire workers fired for their union support and pay them. #LaborHistory #OrganizetheSouth #UnionsforAll #NorthCarolina #UFCW
