SO YOU’RE GOING ON VACATION AND WHILE YOU DON’T WANT TO GO FULL FUCK IT AND COME BACK UNABLE TO FIT IN YOUR JEANS, YOU DO WANT TO ENJOY THE TRIP AND NOT FEEL DEPRIVED. What’s a girl to do?? There’s one thing I do on vacation no matter what that allows me to strike the balance between relaxing and enjoying without completely sabotaging myself. No matter what the meal, I always always look for non-starchy veggies and protein. And if the dish I want doesn’t have those two things, I will literally order them on the side. This happened at my first breakfast in Mexico. I saw gluten-free plantain pancakes with blueberry compote (and c’mon, who isn’t ordering that??). So, instead of either telling myself I couldn’t have it or eating the whole thing, I took the third option and ordered a side of chicken and veggies (yes, at breakfast). I ate the chicken and veggies first (eating in order to keep blood sugar stable is another good travel hack: fiber first, then protein/fat, then carbs/sugar). Lo and behold, it made me too full to eat the whole plate of pancakes which I easily could have done. Notice, nothing about this approach relies on willpower. We are adding in, not taking away. There is just one caveat to this and it’s for my hypothyroid heroes... I’m all for loosening up on vacation, but not if it’s going to flare symptoms. I don’t know about you, but I am not trying to feel tired, gassy, and bloated. That does not a fun vacation make. So even though I may treat myself to a few more cocktails than usual, I hold strong when it comes to avoiding gluten and dairy. And as you’ll see from the photos, there are still plenty of incredible dishes to choose from even with that boundary firmly in place.
