I hosted my book club Fros & Prose for our final meeting of 2024. We read and discussed Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson. @HarperCollins As always, we had a great discussion! We explored the themes of friendship, sisterhood, girlhood, eldest daughter-hood, family, community, class and gentrification. @writeinbk’s novel hit closer to home than a lot of the books we’ve read over the last nine years. Monday’s Not Coming is set in Southeast Washington, DC. The majority of us previously worked for DC Public Schools and/or still work with children in the city, so we were able to speak firsthand to how systems and society at large fails Black girls. We ended our meeting with our annual Black Elephant Gift Exchange, which is White Elephant but gifts must be from Black businesses. Here are all the Black-owned brands we gifted each other this year: @Asutra @ShopKhoi @Tabitha Brown for @target @Uncle Nearest 🥃 Out of Bounds Game @Kulture Karaoke @elisajohnson.co @PATTERN Beauty @Berootedco @Pat McGrath Labs @thelipbar @Fenty Beauty @manifestyourpurpose The two cocktails served were made using Black owned brands too—Uncle Nearest’s Nearest Green and @Caribe and Co’s Sorrel & Ginger Caribbean-inspired Flavored Syrup. #frosandprose #bookclub #bookclubmeeting #dcbookclub #bookish #bookstagram #blackbookstagram #tiffanydjackson #yafiction #yanovel #blackgirlsreading #wellreadblackgirl
