Your first winter with chickens can be a little scary… but with common sense and good research you and your flock will be just fine! #chickens #winterchickens #backyardflock
Do chickens need a heat source in winter? I think it depends on your setup and how comfortable you want your chickens to be and if you want them to lay eggs or not. We’ve had our hens in a mobile chicken coop below 0F but they were not happy about it and didn’t lay us any eggs. It all just depends on your context #backyardchickens #layinghens #chickens #homestead #homesteading #farmstead #winterchickens #permaculture
In most situations quality insulation and the deep litter method will be enough to keep your chickens cozy and supplemental heat will not be necessary or beneficial to your flock- however- there will always be exceptions to the rules and these exceptions must be made with a safe and reliable heat source like a radiant heater and NEVER with a heat lamp. Use common sense this winter, weigh the pros and the cons, and make whatever choice you know you can live with. #winterchickens #chickenmom #backyardchickens

The chickens finally came out, but they definitely don’t go to far with all the snow and cold temperatures. When it comes to chickens in the winter, the key is to ensure they have adequate shelter from the cold by providing a well-insulated coop, access to fresh, unfrozen water, and choosing cold-hardy chicken breeds; most chickens can tolerate cold temperatures without supplemental heat if their coop is properly prepared. Our coop is fully prepared and they know it’s there warm safe place. We are counting down days till Spring around here. #missourisnowstorm2025 #chickens #winterchickens
I don’t know why chickens are so great for my mental health but I’ve never loved chores except my chicken chores. Taking care of my girls and my Roos just helps heal something and I love them so much. #chickens #chickensoftiktok #chickentok #deeplittermethod #winterchickens 🥰
