Hi, my name is Enya, I’m 27 years old, and it took me 27 years to finally get this sports prosthesis. Why? Because the insurance company believed I didn’t need it to participate in society. But what does “participating in society” actually mean? In the Netherlands, where we claim to fight for inclusion, we are still excluding a large group of people. Why? Because a sports prosthesis costs around €5,000 to €6,000. Yet, that’s still cheaper than all the healthcare I would need if I weren’t fit and had to visit doctors every week. Fortunately, I have it now, thanks to a fund I’m incredibly grateful for! But now what? Normally, when you buy new running shoes, you get tips and advice. I received my prosthetic leg… and a “good luck.” How am I supposed to move with it? What’s best for my body? All these questions are running through my mind. That’s why I’d love to take you along on my journey: learning how to exercise with a sports prosthesis!
