Who made this hole? Use the pinky test to find out! If your pinky easily fits, you may have just found a taphole, previously used for sap collection to make maple syrup. If the hole is smaller than your pinky, it could be the work of the yellow-bellied sapsuckerâa small woodpecker that drills holes in straight, horizontal rows to feed on the treeâs sap. Now, if the hole is significantly larger than your pinky, thereâs a good chance the culprit is still a woodpeckerâespecially if the tree is old and decaying. This woodpecker however, such as the pileated woodpecker, was most likely looking for insects under the loose bark.
