What a year it’s been! Thank you to this amazing community for your love and support! 2024 was surreal. The two schools I support had some of the top academic gains in our state. This online community has grown to over half a million followers across platforms. And I was even included in PEOPLE Magazine. Being a principal is the greatest job in the world. I’m so grateful for the outstanding students and the dedicated colleagues who make me look forward to going to school each day. And to my family, I love you. We ask teachers to submit lesson plans out of compliance to make sure it gets done. But here’s the thing: The majority of teachers are going to have a plan for their students–and they don’t need to submit it on a template. Here’s what we do at our school: We don’t require teachers to submit plans. And if someone isn’t teaching, that’s a one-on-one conversation. Here are two things that would significantly increase teacher morale: 1. Let’s provide teachers with more trust. 2. When an educator isn’t performing, follow-up individually. As a novice administrator, I used to be a pushover with student behavior. I didn’t want to overstep the teacher. And I lacked confidence. Here’s what I do differently now: I activate Dean Mode. When in Dean Mode, I prioritize teacher support and student culture above everything else. Admin, learn from my mistakes. We can’t retreat to our offices.
