“Long before the child learns to talk properly—and long before it learns to think philosophically, the world will have become a habit. A pity, if you ask me. My concern is that you do not grow up to be one of those people who take the world for granted.” — Jostein Gaarder, from the book Sophie’s World I have been re-reading one of my favorite books, Sophie’s World, that was gifted to me in high school by my philosophy teacher. This quote about viewing the world as habit struck me both at 18 and again at 29. There is so much joy, beauty, and wonder in the world and all we have to do is notice. In this liminal time between the holidays and new years, I’ve been reflecting on my goals for the upcoming year. I don’t like rigid resolutions or concrete, achievement focused goals, but I think maintaining this sense of wonder and making a conscious choice to notice the world around me every day will be my mindset for 2025. 🫶
