#154: The History of Buñuelos! It’s Christmas! Which means it’s time for my family to do its yearly tradition of making buñuelos. So what exactly are buñuelos? These buñuelos are a delicious Mexican treat — usually made around Christmas Time — that are essentially disks of crispy deep-fried dough topped with cinnamon and sugar. After reading up on the history of this treat, I’ve learned that it has roots in Spain, and according to some sources, buñuelos were most likely invented by the Moors – the Muslim Arabs who ruled medieval Spain for eight centuries, between 711 and 1492 AD. Many countries throughout Latin America have their own versions of buñuelos — sometimes with different names, different ingredients, and different baking methods. For example, in countries like Cuba, buñuelos are made with yuca. And In Colombia, buñuelos are typically made with cheese. Even in Mexico, everyone and their mom makes it their own way. Even Bimbo has their own version, appropriately called Bimbunuelos. My family’s buñuelos are specifically made with flour, anise, cane sugar, and other secret ingredients that I’m not allowed to say.
