On this day, January 26, 1945, Audie Murphy faced an overwhelming German assault outside Holtzwihr, France. Murphy had already risen from private to company commander, and had fought with distinction in Africa, Sicily, Salerno, and throughout Italy. Here he found his company under attack by **six tanks and waves of over 250 infantry.** With his men vastly outnumbered and in imminent danger of being overrun, Murphy ordered them to retire to a secondary defensive line. But he stayed behind. Murphy initially laid in a ditch to call artillery fires on the approaching Germans, alongside one remaining M10 tank destroyer. But when the M10 was was hit and its crew killed, Murphy climbed onto the burning vehicle and began operating its .50 caliber machine gun. From this exposed position, he put withering fire from the .50 and continued to call for artillery fire on the advancing Germans, successfully holding them at bay for over an hour. Murphy called strikes so close to his position that he later recalled, **“the rounds were literally bursting in front of me.”** The tank destroyer twice took direct hits from German tank main guns, but each time, Murphy re-emerged on the .50 cal. At one point, he noticed a squad of Germans who’d crept into the ditch 10m away from him and were about to assault his position. He quickly spun the .50 and destroyed the entire squad at close range. Wounded in the leg but refusing to back down, he continued to fight. Only when all his ammunition was spent did Murphy leave the burning tank destroyer. But he wasn’t finished. When he returned to his company, he refused medical treatment and personally led an aggressive counterattack, driving the enemy into a full retreat and securing the position. For this, Murphy received the Medal of Honor. Images: 1) Murphy starring as himself in the film version of his memoir, To Hell and Back. 2) Satellite view depicting the positions of Murphy & the Germans. 3) View of the Germans maneuvering on Murphy. 4) Position of the tank destroyer. 5) Murphy’s POV from the M10. #infantry #history #militaryhistory #wwii #ww2 #dogfacesoldier #3id #combat #war #army #military #usmc #marines #🇺🇸
