If you know you know š āWe became reactors rather than actors in life.ā This trait highlights how growing up in dysfunctional environments conditions us to respond to lifeās challenges based on fear, trauma, and learned survival mechanisms, rather than making conscious, empowered choices. ACA helps individuals shift from automatic, fear-based reactions to intentional actions rooted in self-awareness and emotional healing. The Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA) program is a 12-step recovery fellowship designed to help individuals who grew up in dysfunctional familiesāwhether addiction was present or not. ACA focuses on healing the deep emotional wounds caused by childhood experiences, offering a path to break free from patterns of fear, shame, and codependency. The program teaches us to become actors in our lives instead of reactors, empowering us to respond with intention rather than repeating old survival patterns. Growing up in dysfunction contributes to the ACA āLaundry Listā of traits, such as people-pleasing, perfectionism, and difficulty with intimacy. Through ACA, we learn to reparent ourselves, build healthier relationships, and cultivate self-love and emotional freedom.
