Don't slow down your putting stroke! Have you ever seen Brandt Snedeker putt? He uses a "pop" technique and has a very quick tempo. Now, I am not saying do your own "pop" technique, but I am saying that you should have a consistent tempo. Often times amateur golfers will take a slow and short backstroke, manually accelerate the putter, and then have a longer follow through than backstroke. The problem is your manual acceleration varies so you never know the speed the putter is moving as it gets to the ball. THE RIGHT WAY: When you putt, the putter should be accelerated by gravity alone. When the putter is accelerated by gravity, its highest rate of acceleration is right at the beginning of its decent, and then the putter has decelerating acceleration so that when it hits the ball the putter "cruising". Then, since there is an energy transition from club to ball, the follow through should not be nearly as long as the takeaway. By using gravity and taking out your influence you do two things: 1) The distance the ball goes on an identical putt is 100% proportional of the length of the takeaway. 2) If your tempo is consistent, the time from the start of the stroke to impact should take the same amount of time whether you hit a 4 footer or 40 footer.
