We're nearly done with the new artifact displays! With a few additional signs to explain what each of these incredible pieces are, the Pattee era at America's Stonehenge will have its own completed section of the museum!
While this is great for the more recent history of America's Stonehenge, it means there is also much more room in the existing display cases for ancient and Indigenous artifacts. That means more renovations are still to come in the new year!
Stop by the museum in Salem, New Hampshire to see all of our new exhibits and, of course, tour the historic site where these artifacts were discovered! #americasstonehenge #museum #artifact #exhibit #historymuseum #historicsites #archaeology #history #salem #newhampshire #newyear
On Christmas Eve in 1801, Jonathan Pattee purchased the property now known as America's Stonehenge. In the following years, he, his wife, and their children lived on this land (contributing many artifacts to the archaeological record in the process). All of that history started 223 years ago today! Happy Holidays from America's Stonehenge! #americasstonehenge #thisdayinhistory #history #christmas #christmaseve #holiday #americanhistory #archaeology #19thcentury #salem #newhampshire
When on a tour of America's Stonehenge, it is important to remember that the structures you are seeing are just the tip of the iceberg at this archaeological site. Thousands of artifacts have been found across this ancient landscape within living sites, work sites, and sacred spaces. Recent aerial photographs of the site help to put these structures into context with the rest of this historic property! #americasstonehenge #archaeology #history #ancient #ancienthistory #artifact #museum #historicsites #drones #research #salem #newhampshire
Renovations are underway at America's Stonehenge! We have some great new displays incorporating much more of New Hampshire's history than our previous exhibits. We are also adding new artifact displays to provide better organization to our collections, and will also help our visitors understand the depth of history that New England is home to! While we are still currently working on these latest updates, the museum and historic site are open every day for you to explore thousands of years of history in Salem, New Hampshire! #americasstonehenge #museum #historymuseum #historicsites #renovation #renovationproject #exhibit #artifact #history #archaeology #salem #newhampshire
These two axes, both found at America's Stonehenge, help to tell the story of Salem, New Hampshire's landscape. While their creation and use are separated by thousands of years, both of these axes served the same vital function for life in New England. The forests of New Hampshire have yielded timber products for thousands of years, allowing people to craft wooden structures ranging in size from dugout canoes to gunships that served in the Royal Navy. While thebhistory of the logging industry is well documented in New Hampshire, it is remarkable to find evidence of both ancient and modern logging, in the form of these axes, on the same site! #americasstonehenge #history #americanhistory #artifact #archaeology #museum #salem #nh #newhampshire #localhistory #logging #axe #woodworking
