… when building an ancestor altar it’s important to do divination first to see exactly how it is that the spirits would like for you to set up their gathering place. Some ancestors like to be outside with an eggun stick and a vessel of water. Some ancestors like to be on a Boveda Table Top. Specific loved ones may want an altar place all by themselves with a doll to rest their energy. Some customs and traditions ancestors reside and eat on the floor. But when one is unable to find out exactly what it is that their ancestors would like the simplest way is two glasses and one candle. When you identify each glass as belonging to each lineage, it makes receiving messages from each side of the family easier to distinguish. Seeing signs like bubbles in the glass or the water getting cloudy allows for a simple way of understanding where the message is coming from. For those who don’t know their lineages history, it gives respect to both sides without stepping on any toes in regard to differences based on historical tension. This style of altar place for ancestors is sometimes suggested by the spirit during divination. There is no right or wrong way to build an ancestor altar. The only thing needed is respect for all the spirits involved and a listening ear for exactly what it is the spirits would like to make it easier for them to assist you.
