i guess I was just expecting something else. it's still an essential russian classic that I think everyone should read, but I just found it to be overall depressing. plus, anna only appeared every now and then and she was who I wanted to read about! make sure to follow on here and ig (thelovelythings505) 🤎 #annakarenina #leotolstoy #Tolstoy #annak #annotatewithme #readwithme #readingvlog #penguinclothboundclassics #russianliterature #russianlit #annotatedbooks #annotations #annotatedbook #penguinclassics #BookTok #booktoker #currentread #bookrecommendations #classicliterature #classiclittok #classiclittiktok #classicbooks #shelfie #classicnovels
The beginning of Les Misérables starts off telling us about a man named Monseigneur Myriel, who is the Bishop of Digne. As to be expected, he is a godly man who takes his role as Bishop very seriously. But even though the Bishop is a godly man who lives in the spirit, he is still a man who holds prejudices and biases like everyone else. We see this come to play when he has a conversation with a man who everyone ostracizes due to his involvement in The French Revolution. In the brief moments we see between the Bishop and the man who is referred to as simply “G” , we see that his morals and beliefs for participating in the overthrow of the monarchy came from the fact that the poor were being mistreated. He asks a brutal but very important question that even the Bishop couldn’t overlook which is: how can the mistreatment of the rich and powerful be more important than the mistreatment of the poor? Are they not both human deserving of rights and respect? I found their interaction to be extremely powerful, and it shows how much we judge people without really knowing more about them. This man had good justification for his involvement, yet everyone assumed that he was a bad man simply because he went against the norm. I’m very intrigued with this story already. I’m loving the dialogue and how Hugo is already making me think about things more in-depth! Stay tuned for more of my thoughts as I read Les Misérables by Victor Hugo by the end of the month! 🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷 - - - - - #annotatedbooks #annotations #annotated #annotating #currentread #currentlyreading #darkacademia #darkacademiaaesthetic #penguinclassics #books #bookish #lesmiserables #victorhugo #classicbooks #classiclit #classicliterature #classicnovels #classicbooks #aesthetic #aestheticedits #bookishaesthetic

Bookish vibes: last, now, next edition. 📖✨️ ✨️Last: Cannery Row by John Steinbeck 🕯Now: Confessions by Saint Augustine ✨️Next: Travels with Charley In Search of America by John Steinbeck ✨️Last: I finished Cannery Row yesterday morning and loved how it ended. The world of Cannery Row felt so alive. It reminded me of a little town you stop through on a road trip. Quaint, small, yet full of life and humanity. I give it a solid 4⭐️ ✨️Now: I'm doing a full theological dive into Confessions by Saint Augustine. This will be a slow read for me because I want to take a lot away from this. ❤️ ✨️Next: Since I'm in my Steinbeck era, I figure I might as well read another short novel by him! Travels with Charley has been on my mind the most, and I actually intended on reading it before Cannery Row, but I couldn't find where I put it lol. I'll probably start that one today or tomorrow! Everything in Cannery Row feels so real and alive, working together as in an ecosystem of life.🐸🐙🌃🚤 Steinbeck describes everything so intricately, it's impossible not to feel a part of the world within the story. We get small and intimate glimpses into the lives of almost every character, and those little moments feel like everything. One of my favorite scenes consists of only 5 paragraphs. The characters within these 5 paragraphs go unnamed, and we never learn anything personal about them. But in the small moment of time Steinbeck gives us with them, we see two soliders walking around the *pearly* morning with their two lady loves. "They strolled softly in the pearly light. They had a hell of a time, and they felt good." 💘✨️ And in this small scene, we get to enjoy this special moment with these two couples in love as they lay in the sand. I don't know why it resonated with me so much, but I think that's something about Steinbeck that I love. His ability to make small and seemingly insignificant moments, seem larger than they really appear. 💚 I'm looking forward to reading more and seeing what happens with Doc, Mack and the boys and their adorably named dog 'Darling' (SO CUTE.) follow on i..g:thelovelythings505 for more classic literature and John Steinbeck content 💚 - - - - - - #johnsteinbeck #steinbeck #canneryrow #penguinclassics #darkacademia #darkacademiaaesthetic #annotatedbooks #annotations #pinterestaesthetic #pinterest #annotatedbook #BookTok #booktoker #currentread #currentlyreading #bookrecommendations #classicliterature

the songbird and the heart of stone recently came out! this is the third book in the crowns of nyaxia series by carissa broadbent ⚔️

i’ll forever be a fan of carissa’s writing style. i love that the sections start with memories of her character’s past and how it connects to the present that we’re about to explore

this was a book about self discovery to me. self realization. finding your own power. self acceptance. owning your past and not letting it define you. a story of sacrifice. of healing. of love

i expect a twist at the end of her books, but this one had me shrieking out loud and kicking my feet to the point i woke up my husband lol

this book ended with the perfect platform to launch into the sequel. i have zero idea where she’s going to take the story, and i love that she’s not so predictable with her writing

very interesting concept with them trekking the levels to the underworld, and i always love reading her descriptions of the gods, especially nyaxia. gives me chills! #BookTok #bookreview #crownsofnyaxia #thesongbirdandtheheartofstone #carissabroadbent #bookish #bookworm #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #romantasybooks #mische #mischeandasar #bramblebooks #fantasybooks #annotatedbooks #annotations #signedbooks #brambleromance #charterbooks @Carissa Broadbent @BrambleBooks @Charter Books
