I ground my panel with a rough mix of Azo Gold fluid acrylic and Satin Glazing Liquid – both from Golden. Why do you cover the panel with orange just to cover it all up again? This underpainting warms up my paintings and unifies all the colors. Even though I cover much of it up, many little orange/red flecks and tones show through my layers giving my paintings a unique energy and movement that I like. I prefer this warm red/orange ground because it compliments my earth and sky palettes. What pen are you using to sketch? I’m using alcohol markers in various shades of Light Umber. These marker lines won’t wash away with subsequent layers, but hide nicely under my subsequent layers. I love the brush tips on these markers as I can do quick broad strokes or fine detail. What surface do you paint on? My favorite surface is Claybord from Ampersand. These are archival hardboard panels with an ultra smooth kaolin clay surface which is slightly absorbent. I like to work on a smooth, rigid support. Why do you use acrylics and not oils? I like to paint quickly in many layers. Because acrylics dry so fast, I prefer them over oils. I don’t mix wet paints on my panel, but prefer to use layers of broken color to get the effects that I want. My favorite paints are Fluid Acrylics from Golden.
